More than 100,000 migrants have crossed the Channel on small boats from France to southeast England since Britain began publicly recording the arrivals in 2018, official figures revealed on August 11. Border force staff go about their days and boats navigate in and out at the port of Dover after at least four people died when a small boat apparently packed with migrants capsized in freezing temperatures in the Channel overnight, according to the UK government. Dozens of others were plucked from the waters of one of the world's busiest shipping lanes in a large-scale rescue operation involving UK and French emergency services. IMAGES

More than 40,000 migrants have crossed the Channel to Britain so far this year according to the UK government, whilst Britain and France have just signed a new deal in November - increasing what the French border controls are paid in order to prevent these crossings.
