The 5-star winners in this batch range from affordable supermini and small MPV to high-end executive electric cars. Despite having different powertrains and price tickets, all five-star cars performed very well overall in terms of crash protection and crash avoidance. There are stand-out performances from the new Nissan Qashqai in the area of safety assist and the Mercedes-EQS for adult and child occupant protection. FIAT’s electric supermini, the 500e, and the all-new MG Marvel R, also both put in strong performances and achieved commendable four-star ratings.
Euro NCAP tested 33 new cars in 2021, of which 22 achieved the top 5-star rating. Among the successes, the Mercedes-EQ EQS emerged as best in the “Executive Car” and “Pure Electric” categories, narrowly beating runner-up the Polestar 2. In the “Small Off-Road” category, the winner is the Nissan Qashqai with an outstanding performance in active safety. The award in the “Large-Off Road” category goes to Škoda’s first all- electric SUV, the Enyaq iV. The Toyota Yaris Cross took the top spot in the “Small MPV” category and the Škoda Fabia was the best “Small Family Car”.The Euro NCAP Best-in-Class award is given to those cars which perform best overall in categories with at least three entrants that year. Winners must have achieved a five-star rating and must have no critical body region coloured red in the full-scale tests.
The Nissan Townstar is a corporate twin to Renault Kangoo and their structure is practically identical. Euro NCAP compared both vehicles to verify that the Renault Kangoo results can be applied to Townstar and performed additional tests where necessary.
The Dacia Jogger, sharing the same platform as the two-star model Sandero Stepway tested by Euro NCAP last year, drops cheerlessly to one star. The car is offered in five- seat, two-row or seven-seat, three-row forms and a seatbelt reminder is not available in the rearmost seats of the latter. Inevitably, the car loses a fraction of a point compared to its partner model and uses up the tiny margin that the Sandero had to remain at two stars.
July 2022 sees the introduction of new vehicle safety legislation, mandating the fitment of important safety systems such as autonomous braking and speed assistance on new vehicle types. And it will be a busy one for Euro NCAP too, in its 25th year, with many cars lined up for testing and with plans for a new roadmap to set the course for safety for the next decade. In the meantime, car manufacturers continue to recognise the value which consumers and fleet operators place on a good Euro NCAP rating. Volkswagen gave the popular Polo a solid facelift, which, in addition to extra style, especially added more technology. Thanks to the addition of new centre airbags and more capable crash avoidance systems, the facelifted Polo cleared the hurdle for a 2022 five-star rating.
