Life under rebel rule in an Ethiopian holy city

Description

Residents of Lalibela, a city in northern Ethiopia home to storied medieval rock-hewn churches, describe life during the recent occupation by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) insurgent group. Over four months of deprivation and violence, the rebels looted homes and health facilities, while residents lost touch with the outside world due to cuts in transportation, electricity, banking and communications.

  • Ethiopian Regional Capital City Under Fierce Bombardment As Residents Flee

    Eyewitnesses who have fled Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia's Tigray region, is under fierce bombardment. CNN reports a communications blackout in the region has made reporting on claims from both sides difficult. About half a million residents live in Mekelle. UNICEF says roughly half of them are children. More than 43,000 Ethiopian refugees have crossed into neighboring Sudan since fighting began on November 4th. The number of people internally displaced inside Tigray is growing daily. According to the UNHCR, the pre-existing refugee camps in the region only have food supplies to last three days.

  • David Dinkins, Former New York Mayor, Dies At 93

    Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins has died at the age of 93. Dinkins holds the distinction of being the city's first African American mayor. According to CNN, Dinkins served as the 106th mayor of New York City from 1990 to 1993. He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey, and graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. His wife, Joyce Dinkins passed away on October 11 at age 89. Dinkins is survived by two children and two grandchildren.
