France 2022: Ex-Justice minister Taubira edges towards run for president

Description

Just five years ago a Socialist president, Francois Hollande, was running France. Now supporters are wondering if the left will be more than a footnote in the coming presidential fight. In the meantime, former Socialist minister Christiane Taubira, a respected figure among the party's base, has said she is "considering" joining the fray in a unification bid. FRANCE 24 spoke to Ariane Bogain, a lecturer in French and politics at the Northumbria University, to find out more about what Taubira's candidacy would mean for the upcoming race.

Dati's arrival was the biggest surprise in last week's cabinet shake-up that saw 34-year-old Gabriel Attal take over as prime minister. Up until her appointment, Dati was a long-standing member of the opposition conservative LR party, and is mayor of the French capital's chic 7th district that is home to most French ministries, the country's parliament and many foreign embassies.
