Bryan Betancur was one of the hundreds of those arrested for participating in the January 6th violent insurrection at the US Capitol. On probation, Betancur knew his movements were being tracked electronically, so he had asked permission to go to Washington to sell Bibles. But after the Maryland man's GPS monitor showed he was in the US Capitol during the mob attack, he was arrested. According to Newser, he was charged with entering a restricted building or grounds, unlawful activities on Capitol Grounds, and disorderly conduct. Newser reports federal court documents say Betancur belongs to several white supremacist organizations. Investigators found photos on social media of Betancur in a Proud Boys shirt while displaying a Confederate flag.
Former FBI Director James Comey gave an interview to the Guardian. In the interview he eviscerated President Donald Trump, his supporters, and the Republican Party. He described the pro-Trump riot at the Capitol as the US's "Chernobyl." Comey said the riots were the result of a breakdown in the country's checks and balances caused by Trump. Comey has been forthright about the president in recent days. According to Business Insider Comey has reservations about giving Trump post-presidential intelligence briefings.
NBC News reports that the FBI is probing whether foreign actors provided funding any of the Capitol Hill riot groups. According to a report by Bitcoin experts last week, $500,000 was transferred to US far-right groups and individuals. Business Insider reports the bitcoin was transferred by a now deceased French national about a month ahead of the riots.
