Implicit Racial Bias, Juror Trust In Cops Makes It Hard To Convict Officers

Description

According to criminal justice experts, it is rare and extremely difficult to convict a law enforcement officer after him or her was involved in a fatal shooting. Recently in Minnesota, former officer Jeronimo Yanez was found not guilty of second-degree manslaughter in the July 2016 killing of Philando Castile. Experts say jurors are reluctant to second-guess split-second life-or-death decisions of a police officer in a potentially violent street encounter. Cops are also held to a higher legal standard according to experts, and implicit racial bias plays a role in legal decisions.
