Rubio On Venezuelan Sanctions: 'You Can Expect More'

Description

The GOP expects to levy even more sanctions on Venezuela if its government creates a dictatorship. The Trump administration imposed sanctions on 13 senior Venezuelan officials on Wednesday. It's an attempt to pile pressure on wildly unpopular President Nicolas Maduro to scrap plans for a new congress. According to Reuters, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said at a press conference about the sanctions, "You can expect more."

In September, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US would place more sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Pompeo accused Maduro's government of working with Tehran 'to flout the UN arms embargo.' US officials say intervening to stop Iranian tankers from reaching Venezuela was an option, raising concerns Trump may seek a confrontation before the election.
