New Study Shows How Physical Activity Can Help Prevent Dementia

Description

Researchers from Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany believe they have discovered how exactly physical activity may help to prevent dementia in old age. The study, which was published in the August edition of Nature, investigated the effects of regular exercise on brain metabolism and memory in 60 participants between the ages of 65 and 85. The results of the study showed that physical activity has an influence on brain metabolism as it prevents an increase in choline, a metabolite that rises as a result of an increased loss of nerve cells. Researchers found physical exercise also causes a stable cerebral choline concentration in the group that participated in bike training. Through the study, researchers concluded that physical exercise not only improves physical fitness but may also help to protect cells.
