Maduro Mocks Rajoy, Says Trump Couldn't Find Venezuela On A Map

Description

On Wednesday, Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro fired back at two of his main international critics, rebuking Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy for "meddling" while also mocking US President Donald Trump for his geographical ignorance. As international pressure increases on Maduro over alleged human rights violations, the United States has recently imposed sanctions on Venezuelan officials while Spain has pressed the European Union to follow suit.

While the nations are US President Donald Trump's most frequent foreign-policy targets, Iran has been sending oil tankers directly to Venezuela. In September, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US would place more sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Pompeo accused Maduro's government of working with Tehran 'to flout the UN arms embargo.' US officials say intervening to stop Iranian tankers from reaching Venezuela was an option, raising concerns Trump may seek a confrontation before the election.
