Mexico Says Despite Progress NAFTA Talks May Run Into 2018

Description

On Wednesday, Mexico opened the possibility to allow NAFTA talks to run into 2018, stretching the negotiations beyond an end-December deadline designed to avoid Mexico’s presidential election campaign which kicks off in March. At the end of a five-day session in Ottawa, the United States, Canada and Mexico said that while progress had been made, much work remained in order to conclude the negotiations by the end of the year. Mexico’s Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo told reporters, "We have the ambition, we have the strength to try to move forward with a view to closing a negotiation but no one can assure with total certainty that we will be able to do it."

  • Mexico at G20: We need to differentiate long run effects

Venice (Italy), Jul 10 (EFE) .- (Camera: Álvaro Padilla) The Government of Mexico is defending in the G20 summit, which concludes Saturday in Venice, that the so-called Special Drawing Rights (SDR) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) can also be reallocated to middle-income countries, as requested by Argentina.FOOTAGE OF ARTURO HERRERA, MEXICAN TAX OFFICE SECRETARY.Translation:"Inflation worries me in general but this year I think it's mostly temporary effects. We need to monitor them and analyse them deeply so we can differentiate what effects are medium run and which temporary. Most of them, we think, are temporary, but some topics, like the global scarcity of microprocessors which is affecting the price of some goods, like cars or used cars, those are more long run. But we are trying to deeply analyse so we can differentiate between the light things from the important."
