Survey Shows High Opioid Use


More than one in five people insured by Blue Cross and Blue Shield were prescribed an opioid painkiller at least once in 2015, the insurance company reported Thursday. And claims for opioid addiction and dependence spiked nearly six-fold between 2010 and 2016, the company said. The report, which covers 30 million people with Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance in 2015, supports what experts have been saying: much, if not most, of the opioid overdose epidemic is being driven by medical professionals who are prescribing the drugs too freely.

    According to a new Reuters poll, most Americans want tougher gun laws but they have little confidence that lawmakers will take action. The poll was released ahead of the one-year anniversary of the country’s deadliest high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. 69 percent of Americans, including 85 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of Republicans, want strong or moderate restrictions placed on firearms. Among those who want stricter gun control laws, only 14 percent said they were “very confident” their representatives understood their views on firearms. Only 8 percent felt “very confident” their elected representatives would do anything about it.
