Chile: World's driest desert in bloom after heavy rains

Description

After heavy rains in northern Chile this year, the Atacama Desert -the driest in the world- has turned into a land of colourful flowers, a rare phenomenon known as the "flowering desert." In years of very heavy seasonal rains, the phenomenon makes the seeds of some 200 desert plants suddenly germinate a couple months after the precipitations.

According to the researchers, the Chinchorro People began mummifying human remains in their native Atacama Desert up to 2,000 years before the Ancient Egyptians. The Atacama Desert is one of the driest in the world, an ideal environment for preservation of mummies. The imaging analysis is based on a paleoradiology diagnostic method, which consists of the application of modern medical imaging techniques in the examination of human and animal remains as well as archaeological sites and tools. Who knows what secrets they will discover?
