Iraqi Prime Minister al-Abadi Declares Tal Afar "Liberated" From ISIS

According to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Thursday, Iraqi forces have seized the strategically important city of Tal Afar from the clutches of ISIS. The northwestern city, which was captured by extremists on June 16th 2014, was the last city still under the control of ISIS militants in Iraq's Nineveh province following the liberation of Mosul, about 45 miles to the east. An operation to retake Tal Afar begain 10 days ago. Al-Abadi said, in a statement released Thursday by his media office, "I declare to you that Tal Afar has joined the liberated Mosul and returned to the homeland." However, ISIS fighters continue to control Hawija, west of Kirkuk, as well as the towns of Qaim, Rawa and Ana near the Syrian border.
