New Bill Could Make Child Care Affordable For Working Families

Description

One of the biggest problems for working families across the U.S. is the lack of access to affordable child care. The exorbitant cost can cause severe stress on Americans' finances and as of now, there's no federal policy on the issue. Sen. Patty Murray wants to change that. On Thursday, the Washington Democrat and Rep. Bobby Scott from Virginia introduced the Child Care For Working Families Act aiming to make high quality child care more affordable. One of the main goals is to ensure that families who make less than 150% of their state's median income are not spending more than 7% of their income on child care.

  • Even Financial Planners Say They Missed These Hidden Costs Of Parenthood

Financial planners do know quite a bit about money, generally speaking. But even they get surprised sometimes by unexpected costs. And according to Business Insider, financial planners say first-time parenthood is a minefield for such unexpected financial demands. To begin with, just giving birth is an expensive practice. For a woman with insurance, the average birth costs $10,808 without any complications. Once baby arrives, your food bill will go up. A lot. Formula is expensive, especially if baby has special dietary needs. Kiddie meals at restaurants aren't that cheap, either. And teen boys are walking refrigerator-inhalers! And public school isn't really free. School supplies, books, uniforms, sports equipment--the list is endless. Keeping kids engaged and learning after school isn't free, either. Lessons, scouting, clubs, summer camps, family vacations all cost a very pretty penny! Finally, medical care and daycare costs for children can drive parents to distraction. You've been warned!

CHANDAN KHANNA/AFP via Getty Images Joe Biden's presidency is likely good news for Uber and Lyft. The companies won big in California with Prop. 22, a law the President-elect was vocally opposed to. With the new gig-work model in place, companies are likely to try and replicate it in other states. Federal efforts to classify drivers or couriers as employees are likely to fall flat thanks to a divided congress, experts say. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Researchers found that an estimated 11.2 million Americans experienced "catastrophic" healthcare expenditures in 2017. That number is down from 13.6 million in 2010, researchers reported. Researchers defined catastrophic health expenditures as out-of-pocket costs that exceed 40% of your income. The ACA was signed into law in 2010 and fully in effect by 2014.
