Chinese tech company Ehang presented their FlyTaxi concept at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday which transforms a quadcopter into a giant drone taxi that shuttles single human passengers over dense urban environments. The system will be automated, so passengers will just input the destination and enjoy the ride, although it will be possible to drive it manually.
The Dubai police force teamed up with tech company HoverSurf to produce a new police drone-motorcycle hybrid designed for rapid deployment in emergency situations. Four propellers and can lift a driver up to 16 feet off the ground and travel nearly 4 miles for up to 25 minutes. The hoverbike has a max weight of 660 pounds and can rocket through the sky at 43 mph. The flying motorcycle can take pictures with eight cameras and transmit them directly to a police station.
Italdesign and Airbus unveiled the 'Pop.Up', the world's first fully electric, zero emission, drone-carried vehicle, at the Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday. The 'flying car' was designed to help relieve traffic congestion in cities by simply flying out of traffic. The car's driver sits in a frame that is fitted within an autonomous car. When traffic builds up, the driver has the opportunity to escape through calling a drone on their iPhone to wherever they are sitting. The drone then lifts the capsule into the air, and carries it and the driver off to unpolluted freedom. Of course, flying cars present many problems with air traffic control and safety, so the technology is not quite ready for mass adoption, but the concept is exciting. This is the B-Droid, a brand new quadcopter drone with a special extension which is designed to polinate flowers. That's right, the long, metal rod with a fluffy yellow fabric is designed to carry pollen and transfer it to blooming flowers in the spring in light of the world's declining bee population. Begun in 2012, the project is financed by the National Center for Research and Development in Poland. Scientists at the Warsaw University of Technology showcased their B-Droid drone prototype at their lab on Friday. As the name suggests, the B-Droid acts as an artificial honeybee which helps out in the pollination process. Scientists are able to control the drone remotely and can pilot the quadcopter to precisely deliver pollen to many different types of flowers. Various versions of the drones exist to pollinate different types of flowers with widely varying shapes and sizes. Scientists indicate the type of flower they want to pollinate and the B-Droid identifies the appropriate flowers in the field before transfering pollen to that particular species.
