Ghibli and Quattroporte will be available in the Trofeo version, the top of the Maserati range. The brand’s trident – performance, style and flawless handling – honed to perfection. They will boast the same distinguishing features, remaining true to their original identities – sedans according to Maserati – but in a superlative new expression. They are to the previous versions what Flash is to Barry Allen, what Batman is to Bruce Wayne or Superman to Clark Kent. No capes or lasers beaming from the headlights, however, they have the power to hit 326 kilometres an hour: the fastest factory-issued Maserati sedans ever. They represent the ultra-modern fulfilment of the brand’s racing promise, which in the 1960’s came up with the concept of a sporty luxury sedan model. Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo represent a further evolution of the sedan, destiny’s children sporting carbon-fibre inserts. And they are also immune to kryptonite.
Maserati writes a new chapter in its history by expanding its Trofeo collection. Following the 2018 launch of Levante Trofeo, the SUV’s most extreme, most powerful version, the new Quattroporte and Ghibli Trofeo are now available, achieving the pinnacle of performance, sportiness and luxury.To highlight once again Maserati’s all-Italian identity, the colours chosen for the Trofeo collection launch are those of the country’s flag: green for Quattroporte, white for Levante and red for Ghibli, which combine with the burnished chrome-work and glossy red trims for a particularly aggressive and elegant look.Maserati reinterprets its sedans by introducing the V8 engine.The heart of Ghibli and Quattroporte Trofeo is the 3.8 l V8 Twin Turbo with power output of 580 hp at 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 730 Nm.The engine, which has already revealed all its power on Levante Trofeo, is built at the Ferrari plant at Maranello to Maserati’s specifications, and has been modified and developed to deliver equally impressive performances on the rear-engine sedans.
The third generation of the Maserati Quattroporte debuted in 1979 while Maserati was under De Tomaso ownership. It was a return to the classic RWD setup and the V-8 engine which were trademarks of the original Quattroporte full-size sedan of the ’60s. The Quattroporte III was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign.It’s widely considered that the niche class of the fast full-size sedans was created once Maserati unveiled its first Quattroporte - which means ’four doors’ - at the 1963 Turin Auto Show. With that being said, other manufacturers like Facel in France and Lagonda in the U.K. also built fast sedans in the late ’50s and early ’60s.But Maserati was the only sports car manufacturer that stuck to the idea of building fast and luxurious sedans for more than just a few short years. As such, in 1979, the third generation of the Quattroporte finally went into production, three years after it was first shown at the 1976 Turin Auto Show. It featured Italdesign styling and was revigorated as it got a V-8 again, compared to the second generation model which was only available with power coming from a lousy V-6.
