Brazil's Supreme Court Releases Testimony Implicating President Temer

Description

Brazil's Supreme Court released plea-bargain testimony implicating the nation's president in a bribery scheme. According to the testimony, President Michel Temer received about $4.6 million in bribes from executives of meatpacking giant JBS SA. However, these bribes were exchanged in 2014 before he took office. The scathing testimony does not bode well for Brazil's top executive office. Temer recently took over for ex-President Dilma Rousseff, who was impeached late last year. According to the testimony, Rousseff received $30 million in bribes from offshore accounts owned by JBS, while former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva received $50 million from JBS.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) continues to examine on Thursday whether the 2014 re-election of President Dilma Rousseff and her then-vice president Temer should be invalidated because of corrupt campaign funding. If the court votes to scrap the election result, Temer -- who took over only last year when Rousseff was impeached -- would himself risk losing his office, forcing Brazil's congress to pick an interim president.
