The Last Jedi Cast Take Vanity Fair Covers for Star Wars’ 40th Anniversary

Star Wars turns 40 years old this year! May 25, 2017, will mark the 40th anniversary of Star Wars’ first ever theatrical release. To celebrate, Vanity Fair is putting out four separate covers featuring the cast of The Last Jedi for their June issue. You can pick up an issue on June 6.

    Vanity Fair has unveiled a new look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The cast suits up in a series of four covers released Tuesday in celebration of both the upcoming movie and Star Wars' 40th anniversary. The covers were shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, who has been photographing Star Wars casts for Vanity Fair since 1999's Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. Perhaps the most stirring cover features the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, while another cover shows the bad guys of the First Order, including the first photo of Captain Phasma played by Gwendoline Christie without her helmet.

    On May 25, 1977, a weird little sci-fi movie no one believed in opened in a very small number of movie theaters around the country. 20th Century Fox actually had to threaten to withhold an eagerly anticipated summer flick to get movie theaters to carry it. It opened on a Wednesday in only 32 theaters, and eight more picked up the movie for its opening weekend. The film was essentially shoved out the door to die.

    This week marks the 40th anniversary of A New Hope's original release, and Vanity Fair is celebrated by giving everyone an inside look at the upcoming saga film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In addition to a new piece about the movie, an entire gallery of cast and character photos was released. The new photos include shots of Rey, Luke and Kylo Ren, along with some other great characters. The first is a picture of the late Carrie Fisher, in costume, kissing her daughter Billie Lourd.

    May the Fourth be with you, indeed! The cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens graces the cover of Vanity Fair's June 2015 issue. The old-meets-new cover photo, shot by Annie Leibovitz, features Chewbacca, Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn). That's not all, though: Vanity Fair also has photos of Adam Driver as Kylo Ren and Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata! Director J.J. Abrams was admittedly surprised by how eager Ford way to reprise his role. The actor "was excited to get back in those shoes again," said Abrams, "which was really interesting because I thought he hadn't been a fan. I kept hearing those rumors when I was a kid."
