Scientists Say Being Strangled May Save Trees Lives

Description

Meet the strangler fig: a parasitic nightmare that lives on other tropical trees, stealing their soil nutrients, water, and even sunlight through a canopy of dense leaves and tendrillike roots that twist around the host plant. Eventually, the fig’s roots can completely encase the host, strangling its trunk and cutting off nutrient flow until it dies and rots away—leaving just the hollow fig behind. Scientists examined the prevalence of strangler figs in Lamington National Park, Australia, after a cyclone that felled hundreds of trees. It turns out, strangler figs could be protecting their hosts from being uprooted in a number of ways.

  • Watch how Volvo Cars drops new cars from 30 metres to help rescue services save lives

It is the most extreme crash test ever executed by Volvo Cars, and a crucial one. Extrication specialists often use cars crashed at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre to hone their life-saving skills. To allow rescue services to prepare for any possible crash scenario and to simulate the forces that erupt in the most extreme crashes, beyond what can be simulated with ordinary crash testing, Volvo Cars recently took equally extreme measures. For the first time, it dropped several new Volvos multiple times from a crane, from a height of 30 metres. This approach helped create enough damage to adequately simulate the damage found in the most extreme crash scenarios: think of single-car accidents at very high speed, accidents whereby a car hits a truck at high speed, or accidents whereby a car takes a severe hit from the side.

America's coronavirus deaths could surpass 511,000 by the end of February. According to Business Insider, the staggering number comes from a new University of Washington model. The model also found that nearly 130,000 of those lives could be saved if 95% of Americans wore masks. The problem officials found is that only 60% of Americans say they always wear a mask in public. Researchers found that mask-wearing could also delay the need for lockdowns. According to Business Insider, health experts say that wearing masks could also mitigate the worst of the fall-winter surge.
