Yemen - The Escalation: Could Sunni-Shiite divide engulf the region? (part 2)

Description

Yemen's no longer a proxy war in a remote location. A Saudi-led coalition has begun air strikes to stop the Iran-allied Houthi, who already control the capital, from taking over the whole country. Egypt, Jordan, the Gulf States, Sudan and Pakistan are getting involved - a Sunni coalition backed by US intelligence. The US is also assisting Iran-backed Shiite forces against the IS group. Will this contradiction undermine a nuclear deal with Iran? Is this the start of total war in the region?

Supporters of Moqtada al-Sadr stormed Baghdad's Green Zone to demand that the government break with vested interests and militias that are crippling the country, a political gridlock that's enabled Isis to hold vast swathes of territory. A turning point that'll save or doom the Iraqi state? More broadly, 13 years after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein by a U-S-led coalition, how does Iraq hold it together between Shias, Sunnis and Kurds? And what role for outside players like the US and Iran?

Yemen becomes the theater of yet another full-blown regional conflict, with a full-blown Sunnis versus Shias confrontation brewing. In France, the National Front comes second in the local elections first round. And after much controversy, Jeremy Clarkson is fired from popular TV show Top Gear.

  • Iraq Under the Gun: Elections and the Quest for Stability (part 2)

The last time Iraqis went to the polls was in 2010, during the run-up to the departure of US-led forces. This time, they're long gone and sectarian violence is at its worst since 2008. Traffic was banned on election day to prevent car bombings. Voting was almost non-existent in mostly Sunni Anbar province where jihadists have capitalised on simmering anger with Baghdad's authorities. So what's left of Iraq and its democracy? And, after Saddam Hussein, have the US and UK washed their hands of Ira

  • Can Iraq be fixed? (Part 2)

More than ten years after the American army toppled Saddam Hussein, the country has elections, political parties and a functioning news media but what good is democracy if there is no security? Almost every day brings news of sectarian attacks: most of them carried out by Al Qaida against Chiite targets. Cyril Vanier and his panel discuss whether the country can avoid civil war.
