Firefighters Continue Battle With California Wildfire


On Friday, California firefighters confirmed that they had made significant gains against a huge wildfire that chased thousands of people from their homes in Southern California. The fire has currently burnt nearly 58 square miles and was 26 percent contained as it entered its fourth day in mountains 60 miles east of Los Angeles. At the height of the blaze, over 82,000 residents were under evacuation orders, but a small number of evacuees have reportedly been allowed to return home. Plans are also underway to demobilize some of the nearly 1,600 firefighters battling the blaze.

Forecasters warned the hot and dry conditions in the U.S. West would continue over the coming days, which will only help the fire.   • Firefighters Continue Fighting Northern California Wildfire

    Reuters reports, the Delta Fire in California's Shasta-Trinity National forest have been burning for four days and has forced the "closure of an interstate highway in Northern California." It has scorched more than 31,000 acres in the Cascade range. Firefighters are trying to stop it's spread by removing underbrush with bulldozers and hand tools. They are using a controlled burning operation as well. After California witnessed the worst wildfire in its history in July this is the best they can do.

    More than 1,200 firefighters are battling a wildfire raging out of control in Northern California. The wildfire threatens homes and other structures as thick black smoke drifts across the San Francisco Bay Area. The so-called County Fire, has blackened more than 50 square miles of land since Saturday. Officials ordered evacuations in several Yolo County communities. Crews worked through the night to cut control lines around the blaze, which grew by one-third overnight Sunday. As of Monday afternoon, the blaze was only 3 percent contained and was burning into Napa and Lake Counties as well.
