After another black man shot by police, Charlotte ends curfew

Signaling movement toward normalcy after a state of emergency was imposed following the shooting death of a black man by police last week, Charlotte lifts its midnight curfew. A weekend without street violence was highlighted Sunday as the city hosted the NFL game between the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings without interruption. Since 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed Tuesday after a confrontation with Charlotte police, protests continued for a sixth day.

    Tuesday night Charlotte N.C. was a city on fire as protestors gathered to express their outrage over the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, a black man who was shot Monday when police arrived on the scene to arrest another man and encountered Scott instead. Scott was shot by a black police officer in plane clothes, the shooting brought on a night of violence in Charlotte where residence came face to face with police, clashing with rocks, bottles, and tear gas. Currently there are two narratives being circulated about what happened between Scott and the officer. Body cams are standard in NC law enforcement, however the officer in this case was not wearing a body cam.

    Emantic "EJ" Bradford was gunned down by police who mistook him for the suspect in an Alabama shopping mall shooting on Thanksgiving night. Bradford died after being struck by three bullets, all fired from behind him, says Reuters. The official autopsy of 21-year-old Bradford has yet to be released. An independent review from a pathologist commissioned by his family indicates Bradford had his back to police when he was shot. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said, “It clearly demonstrates that EJ posed no threat to the off-duty Hoover Police Department officer who killed him."

  • New York Police Fatally Shot A Mentally Ill Black Man Who Was Holding A Pipe

    On Thursday, New York City's police department said officers fatally shot a mentally ill black man who was carrying a pipe on a Brooklyn street corner on Wednesday after mistaking the metal rod for a gun. The NYPD said they received three separate 911 calls describing a black man wearing a brown jacket and pointing "a silver firearm" at people. When police encountered the man, "The suspect then took a two-handed shooting stance and pointed an object at the approaching officers.
