The new BMW M3 Competition Sedan and the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé will be presented for the first time. With these two high-performance models in the premium mid-range segment, the hallmark M combination of racetrack-oriented performance and superior suitability for everyday use reaches a level never before attained. Their world premiere in Beijing underlines the growing importance of the Chinese automobile market for the BMW M GmbH product range.The new BMW M3 Competition Sedan and the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé are powered by an in-line 6-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, mobilising a maximum output of 375 kW/510 hp and delivering a maximum torque of 650 Nm. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Both models accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds each.
Rodin Cars has completed a significant upgrade to its test-tracks; widening Stage 2 from 7 metres to 10 metres, the construction of a 130 meter radius high speed turn on Stage 3 and a full resurfacing of both tracks. JCL Asphalt was contracted to undertake this significant project, which is part of the continued development of the New Zealand South Island automotive manufacturing facilities. The Test Track Facility is divided into three stages. Stage 1 consists of a 30m radius skid-pad used to fine-tune the balance of a car’s handling. The second stage is an undulating 2,350m 12-turn circuit of dips, blind crests and varying cambers. Finally, Stage 3 is made up of a fast, flat and deceptively challenging 2,438m circuit of seven turns and a 900m straight upon which the Rodin FZED has achieved speeds approaching 300km/h. Stage 2 has now been widened to 10m to allow for a better driver experience.

The latest-generation 3 Series has been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the recent round of Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash testing. Added to which, it emerged with the best ever result for adult occupant protection achieved by a “large family car” (midsize model) since the introduction of the current, extremely demanding Euro NCAP test format. The BMW 3 Series also recorded excellent results for child occupant protection, “Vulnerable Road User” (e.g. pedestrian) protection and standard safety equipment.A five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash testing represents a glowing endorsement of the effectiveness of a vehicle’s integrated safety concept, which – in the new BMW 3 Series, as in other models – encompasses both the body structure and the restraint systems. Supporting structures with a weight-optimised design and a high load-bearing capacity combine with precisely engineered deformation paths in the new 3 Series to provide the ideal basis for preserving the passenger cell’s rigidity in various types of collision – i.e. for keeping the occupants’ survival space intact. In Euro NCAP testing, the aluminium/high-strength steel safety passenger cell of the new BMW 3 Series proved to be extremely robust – both in the frontal and side collisions and the side pole impact. In a frontal collision, the forces acting on the vehicle are diverted via multiple load paths in the floor assembly, side frame, bulkhead and roof, and absorbed by large deformation zones. Reinforced side structures in the B-pillars and side sill areas, high-strength side impact members in the doors and sturdy seat cross-members protect the occupants in the event of a side-on collision. The seats and head restraints have been specially designed to minimise the risk of whiplash injuries resulting from a collision against the rear of the vehicle. Strengthened pillars and roof members ensure that the passenger cell retains its rigidity if the car rolls over.
Nissan Motor Co Ltd unveiled a high-power, twin-motor, all-wheel drive control test car equipped with new technologies, which has been developed for the company’s next generation of electric vehicles (EV). The test vehicle is based on full-electric Nissan LEAF e+, and features an enhanced all-wheel drive system powered by front and rear high-power motors integrated with its chassis control technology. The result is an electric-drive all-wheel-control system that will take the performance of Nissan’s electric cars to a new level, the company noted.This test vehicle is a key component of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, which is the company’s vision of how vehicles are driven, powered and integrated into society. The test car uses separate front and rear electric motors, with the powertrain generating maximum output of 227 kW and 680 Nm of peak torque. This performance output is complemented by the high-precision motor control provided by Nissan’s advanced EV technology. Nissan said that drivers can benefit from the all-wheel control system on nearly any road condition, heightening driving performance and confidence.
