Some Florida residents are preparing for Hurricaine Irma under the motto "Better Safe than Sorry".
The damage wrought by Hurricane Irma left Orlando’s main interstate road with a gigantic hole as seen in drone footage captured on Tuesday. The receding 100 mph winds literally bit a chunk out of an intersection where the I-4 meets the 434 Longwood. Crews have already been called in and are working hard to get the highway back up and running to four lanes as soon as possible, but engineering estimates indicate that the repairs will take about a month to be completed.
The storm of the century has hit the American mainland as Hurricane Irma barreled into Naples, Florida on Sunday, downing trees and power lines and destroying property. Local residents looked on while wind and rain thrashed their neighborhood as the eye of the category three Hurricane descended on the city. However, officials say that Naples got off lucky and that the damage was far less than expected.
Ominous looking clouds over a Home Depot in Maitland, Florida greeted shoppers as they prepared to weather one of the worst Atlantic storms on record: Hurricane Irma. Maitland residents bought supplies and materials on Tuesday in preparation for Irma, which is due to hit Florida later in the week. The hardware store was already running out of supplies, having to place a sign up on their entrance stating that they no longer provided water packs, generators, D batteries or gas cans due to high demand.
Multiple houses were severely damaged and thousands of residents were left without electricity after Hurricane Matthew ripped through Charlotte in North Carolina on Sunday. No casualties were reported but numerous houses sustained severe damage in the storm. Trees were uprooted and fell onto houses and power lines, destroying property and snapping electricity wires like twigs. Emergency services have been dispatched to Charlotte to examine the situation and begin clearing up the damages. Despite the fact that Charlotte was spared the worst rain and wind of Hurricane Matthew, other people across the state suffered worse damages. More than half a million power outages were reported in North Carolina on Sunday morning and large parts of the state have been flooded, with some areas being hit by as much as 16 inches of rain throughout Saturday.
