Surges of COVID-19 patients are threatening to overwhelm hospitals across the nation. CNN reports at least 123,639 people across the country were in the hospital with the novel coronavirus on Saturday. The COVID Tracking Project says that marks the 32nd consecutive day that the number of hospitalizations has exceeded 100,000. Cases skyrocketed after the Thanksgiving holiday. The fallout form Christmas and New Year's celebrations are still unfolding. Johns Hopkins University data reveals that as of Saturday, more than 20.4 million people have been infected with the virus in the US. At least 350,186 people have died from the illness.
Business Insider reports that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will change their annual New Year's Eve plans. They decided to leave Trump's Mar-a-Lago club before its lavish New Year's Eve party, an event that the Trump family attends annually. CNN reported that 500 people had already reserved tickets to the event, which have cost $1000 in the past. Guests had reportedly already started gathering at the resort and were told that Trump would attend. Instead Trump and Melania will spend New Year's Eve at the White House. The White House did not confirm the reason for their change in plans.
According to Business Insider, on Thursday, President Donald Trump responded to a town hall question about a New York Times report which revealed that he only paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017. The report also revealed that Trump paid no income tax in 11 of the 18 years of tax documents that they reviewed. Trump refuses to release his tax returns, saying it's because he is under audit, although there are no rules against it. He also accused the Internal Revenue Service of treating him unfairly. When it comes to his debt, Trump did not deny having $400 million worth of it. He said, "Four-hundred million dollars compared to the assets that I have, all of these great properties all over the world." Trump added, "The amount of money – $400 million, is a peanut." The president did not say to whom he owed the 400 million to, but claimed that he did not owe any money to Russia.
Not everyone was surprised when Donald Trump won the election last November and became the 45th president of the United States. In fact, some stone masons from Great Britain may have predicted a Trump presidency many centuries ago. In an ironic and comical turn of events, a 700 year-old gargoyle with a classic combover resembling Trump's was found in Southwell Minster at the Nottinghamshire cathedral. Tourists have flocked to see the doppelganger, which is one of many gargoyles within the cathedral. It's currently unclear what exactly the builders were trying to tell future generations, but perhaps intepretation of the gargoyle's meaning is best left to clergymen, symbologists, and political pundits.
