Customs Agents Search Cell Phones Without Warrant

Description

Even though a 2014 Supreme Court decision ruled the need for a warrant to search cell phones, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s airport security continued to seize cell phones. The Ninth Court of Appeals ruled that immigration authorities need “reasonable suspicion” to perform electronic device searches back in 2013. Privacy rights activists say that the law isn’t keeping up with technology and this is a violation of civil rights. The security guards have been looking through people’s text messages and downloading the entire contents of their phone onto a government system.
