The worst flooding in over a century has caused the Seine river in Paris to rise to over 6 meters. This exceptional weather has forced the closure of the iconic Louvre museum.
The banks of the River Seine in Paris, popular with pedestrians and runners, are currently underwater after heavy rain saw the water level reach more than 4.20m in the French capital. It is expected to continue to rise. IMAGES
The river Seine remained flooded after torrential downpours further upstream continued to cause disruption to transportation across Paris on Wednesday. Roads and tunnels near the river were closed. The Paris Regional C train (RER C) line was partially shut down. All river traffic, including cruise boats, was suspended because the raised water levels means they are unable to pass beneath the bridges. Some residents were forced to use a small boat to get to work, as roads and walkways near the riverbanks have become flooded.

The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on July 26, 2024, will take part on the River Seine, organisers have announced, breaking the long-held Summer Games tradition of a stadium procession of athletes and officials. More than 160 boats filled with athletes and officials from more than 200 countries will sail almost 6km (4 miles), with organisers expecting crowds of 600,000 people for what they call the largest-ever Olympic ceremony. The closing ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Trocadero, an expanse of gardens and fountains which overlooks the Eiffel Tower. IMAGES
