How Many Refugee Children Have Died in the Mediterranean?

One year ago a young boy washed up on the Turkish shoreline. Since the death of Alan Kurdi became international news, an estimated 730 children have died fleeing strife and war in the eastern Mediterranean. The UN's High Commissioner for Refugees added that on average two children die crossing the sea for passage to Europe and safety. Traveling from North Africa, Syria, and as far as Afghanistan, the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean continues to grow. But it is unknown how many children will be lost as sea. As part of a lost generation, the UN's estimates cannot count those that sank to the deaths of the sea, never to wash ashore.
