'Mary Poppins' Sequel Picks Up Meryl Streep


The hit Disney musical "Mary Poppins" is getting a sequel, and Meryl Streep was just added to the cast. Streep will join the film as a lamplighter who help save the family with the two leads of the film. Streep's character will be named Topsy, and will be Mary Poppin's cousin. The movie will be directed by "Into the Woods" director Rob Marshall. Lin Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt star as the two lead characters of the film which is set in Depression Era London.

    Emily Blunt will star in the lead of role of the Disney sequel to Marry Poppins, "Mary Poppins Returns" which has already begun production. The sequel to Disney's classic 1964 musical will also star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, and original film star Dick Van Dyke. New music is also being written for the film by Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Shaiman is also scoring the film.

    Dick Van Dyke The 91-year-old actor portrayed jack-of-all-trades Bert in the classic 1964 musical movie, and he has confirmed he will return for the sequel, admitting he has been impressed with the cast already announced for the forthcoming film. He said: "This one supposedly takes place 20 years later and the kids are all grown up. "It's a great cast - Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy [Lin-Manuel Miranda] from 'Hamilton'." Van Dyke - who was born in Missouri in the US - recently admitted someone should've told him his fake London accent he put on for the film wasn't up to scratch.

    According to sources, actor Colin Firth is in negotiations to play the character William Weatherall Wilkins in Disney’s upcoming film “Mary Poppins Returns." Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Lin Manuel-Miranda have already been cast in the movie, which is slated for a 2018 Christmas Day release. Blunt will star as the titular character while Miranda will play a streetlamp lighter named Jack, who shares similarities with Dick Van Dyke‘s character from the original movie, which won five academy awards. The film will be directed and produced by Rob Marshall.
