AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford are facing criticism over their COVID-19 vaccine trial results. According to Business Insider the criticism comes after AstraZeneca admitted to a mistake in the vaccine dosage. During the vaccine trial, some patients got two full doses of the vaccine. Others had a half-dose in their first shot, followed by a full dose. On Wednesday, an AstraZeneca executive described the "mistake" as "serendipity." The vaccine was 90% effective in the group with the initial half-dosage, compared to 62% effective in the full-dosage group.
A new study reveals a COVID-19 vaccine under development in England safely promotes an immune response against the virus. According to UPI, the vaccine is in Phase 2 of clinical trials with Astra Zeneca, and is particularly effective in elderly recipients who are over age 70. Researchers say the finding of the 'robust' responses in older people in their study is both significant and encouraging. The populations at greatest risk of serious COVID-19 disease include people with existing health conditions and older adults. The so-called "Oxford vaccine," formally known as ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is one of more than 120 being evaluated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, 48 of these vaccines have gotten into clinical trials to assess their safety and efficacy.
Dolly Parton donates one million dollars for COVID-19 research.
Singer-songwriter Dolly Partin donated to Covid-19 research. Partin donated one million dollars to Vanderbilt University less than one month after Covid-19 reached its pandemic status. It's now come to light that this donation partially went on to fund Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine, a vaccine with a high success rate. According to Anthony Fauci, vaccinations could begin a soon as late December. The first groups receiving the vaccine are high-risk individuals but will be made available to everyone in the coming months. "I felt like this was the time for me to open my heart and my hand and try to help," Partin said in her "Today" appearance.
Scientists used to say there were millions of tons of ice in the permanently shadowed craters of the moon’s poles. Now, HuffPost reports a pair of studies in the journal Nature Astronomy says there's far, far more potential water available. Twenty percent more, to be exact. A team led by the University of Colorado's Paul Hayne says more than 15,400 square miles of lunar terrain have the capability to trap water in the form of ice. However, lead researcher Casey Honniball says the molecules are so far apart that they are in neither liquid nor solid form. To be clear, this is not puddles of water. Casey Honniball, Lead Researcher Postdoctoral fellow, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland Greater access to water could allow astronauts and robots more places to land, and support future lunar bases. Scientists believe the moon's water came from comets, asteroids, interplanetary dust, solar wind, or even lunar volcanic eruptions.
