"Too much suffering and not enough hope." Those were the first words uttered by France's new Prime Minister Manuel Valls before parliament yesterday when he delivered his maiden speech and asked for a vote of confidence. • Military intervention in Syria: Opposition calls for vote in Parliament

When it comes to war, in France, the president of the republic is the only one to decide. Or so says the constitution. But with the UK and the US giving their say to Parliament on a military intervention in Syria, François Hollande could not prevent lawmakers to hold what turned out to be a fractious debate. Even though it was not concluded by a vote, the discussion in both chambers of Parliament brought to the fore deepening divisions between the ruling socialists and the opposition.
