Political Talks In Venezuela End Without An Agreement, New Meeting Planned

Description

On Saturday, members of Venezuela's government and opposition coalition failed to reach an agreement in a new round of talks aimed at resolving the OPEC nation's ongoing political crisis, however both parties plan on meeting in two weeks to try again. Few Venezuelan citizens expect further talks to result in a breakthrough, as Maduro’s foes have been demoralized after seeing him consolidate power ahead of a likely re-election campaign in 2018. The Democratic Unity coalition, which failed to dislodge Maduro through months of street protests, is pressing primarily for a guarantee of free and fair voting in the upcoming election. Julio Borges, president of the opposition-led congress, said, "This process is difficult, heavy, hard and full of debate and confrontation."
