The continuing volcanic eruption of Mount Etna on the island of Sicily could be sighted on Tuesday. The 10,922 foot high mountain has been spewing lava since Monday. Mount Etna is Europe's most active volcano and lies between the cities of Messina and Catania. The current eruption originates at the south-eastern crater and is visible from the east coast of Sicily. The last time Etna erupted was in May 2016 and, according to experts, the current eruption does not threaten nearby settlements.
After having been dormant for eight months Mount Etna on the east coast of Sicily came back to life, as could been seen in timelapse footage recorded on Tuesday. Smoke was rising from the mouth of the volcano and several small strombolian explosions occurred. This is common behaviour for Mount Etna, according to volcanologist Boris Behncke at the Etnean Observatory of the INGV. Etna is Europe’s largest volcano, and among the most active on earth. It has four craters on its summit, where volcanic activity can take place continuously for several years or even decades.
The Philippines' Mount Mayon spews lava from its crater down its slopes as one of the country's most active volcanoes continues to rumble. Mayon, about 330 kilometres (205 miles) southeast of the capital Manila, is considered one of the most volatile of the country's 24 active volcanoes. IMAGES
A column of gases and ashes rises from the crater of Popocatepetl, one of Mexico's most active volcanoes 90 kilometres (56 miles) southeast of Mexico City, as part of its ongoing eruptive activity. IMAGES
People watch in awe as lava spews out of a volcanic fissure in the Geldingadalir volcano in Iceland. The volcano erupted near the capital Reykjavik, spewing red hot lava and plumes of smoke out of a fissure in an uninhabited valley after several days of intense seismic activity. IMAGES
