House Passes Stopgap Spending Bill to Avert Government Shutdown

Description

The House voted 230-197 to keep the government funded for four more weeks, but prospects of a shutdown still hinge on the Senate. Federal funding will lapse at midnight Friday if Republican leaders can’t secure 60 votes to pass the measure in the Senate, where some GOP lawmakers plan to vote against it and Democratic support is uncertain without an immigration deal. The bills passage was assisted by Speaker Paul Ryan who struck a deal with Freedom Caucus conservatives over a separate vote on military funding. The deal came together after Freedom Caucus members circumvented leadership and took their demands directly to President Donald Trump. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is struggling to round up support to keep the government's lights on in the upper chamber. Senate Democrats said they're confident they have the votes to block the stop-gap spending bill that the House passed.
