How to Extinguish a Battery Fire

Description

Lithium ion batteries explode sometimes. And sometimes, they're in your phone when it happens. So, how do you put out a battery fire? According to LifeHacker, make sure the device is unplugged from a power source first. Then, use your Class A, B & C fire extinguisher (which you should totally have on hand). Or, drown your phone entirely in seltzer or other sparkling water. It goes without saying, but your burnt and sodden phone will be toast!

  • Tesla Model S Burns to the Ground at Charging Station

Burning hoverboards are all the rage in recent weeks, but another battery-powered vehicle recently went up in flames in Norway: a Tesla Model S car. An image of the flame-engulfed vehicle was posted by Norway news site VGTV on Friday, just one day into the new year. In the image, viewers can clearly see what looks like a Tesla parked next to a Supercharger station, both covered in flames in broad daylight. Sources say firefighters are shown hosing the vehicle as it continues to give off thick smoke and flames. According to the NRK report, the car, a 2014 Tesla Model S, had been left by its owner to charge when it erupted in flames. No cause of the fire has been revealed, but the report notes that firefighters had to use special foam to extinguish the car, which is powered by lithium-ion batteries.

  • Tesla Is Improving Its Battery Software After 2 Spontaneous Fires

According to Business Insider, Tesla said on Wednesday that it will update the thermal management settings in its vehicles' software in response to a string of seemingly spontaneous fires. The company said it has not yet determined a cause of the Model S which caught fire in a Hong Kong shopping mall on March 14, or that of another in a Shanghai parking garage in April. Tesla went on to say that an update is being made to the charge and thermal management settings out of an abundance of caution, rather than an existing safety hazard.

  • Tesla Model S Driver Burned, Killed When Car Doors Won't Open

A driver died after his 2016 Tesla Model S crashed and burst into flames, in Davie, Florida. Witnesses said the Tesla’s airbags didn’t deflate after the crash and the car’s electronic exterior door handles did not deploy. First responders were unable to get the driver out of the car. According to Digital Trends, when the car’s airbags inflate, the exterior door handles are supposed to extend. The Model S starting burning again while being transported away from the crash site and again at the tow yard. The Tesla Model S uses a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, which are generally safe. However, if a battery is damaged or defective, lithium can explode or catch fire when it comes in contact with water or water vapor in the air. Reports of battery-related fires in Tesla sedans were reported as early as 2013.

This after an explosion believed to be the result of an overheating iPad battery. Gizmodo reports the fire was quickly put out by Apple staff. They put the device in a container with sand, firefighters were called, and the store was evacuated as a precautionary measure. However, according to local media, three people who were present during the incident had to be treated for respiratory issues. As 9to5Mac noted, apparently unrelated issues with iPhone batteries have resulted in “thermal events” in both Switzerland and Spain this year, with the incident in Zurich resulting in one person suffering minor burns and six others receiving treatment for what was likely smoke inhalation.
