Rebels Hold Talks With Russia As Moscow Eyes Role In Shaping Syria

Description

Syrian rebels besieged in their only major bastion near Damascus have resorted to talks with the Syrian government's ally, Russia, as they seek to hang on to their enclave. The meetings, which have occurred in eastern Ghouta, underline Moscow's deepening role in shaping Syria's future following the conflict. The two main rebel forces in the area signed ceasefires with Russia in the summer, however fighting has continued. Both groups claim that they have been talking to Russian officials regularly for several months. Wael Olwan, spokesman for the Failaq al-Rahman insurgents, said, "It’s better to negotiate with the one calling the shots, which is Russia, than with the regime. So the factions are forced to sit down with them. This is the reality.”
