"The BMW Group’s campus for autonomous driving is a state-of-the-art centre of excellence that covers every base when it comes to offering greater capacity for innovation and increased development efficiency – and ultimately securing the company’s future sustainability. 15 months ago, the BMW Group took the decision to pool together its development expertise in the fields of vehicle connectivity and highly / fully automated driving at a single location. The campus, which offers 23,000 square metres of office space with room for 1,800 employees, was completed in record time. The site’s optimum infrastructure, its proximity to the Research and Innovation Centre, and the nearby link to the motorway network helped to swing the decision in its favour. The BMW Group is intending to drive forward development of highly automated vehicles with the new campus in Unterschleißheim, and is looking to recruit IT specialists and software developers in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis."
The BMW Group and Valeo have entered a strategic partnership to work on the joint development of next-generation automated Level 4 parking solutions. This includes the development of solutions for automated valet parking (AVP). Here, the customer leaves their vehicle in a designated drop-off area. The vehicle then searches for a vacant parking space itself, manoeuvres into the space and later exits it again, and can even drive back to the pick-up area for collection by the driver. Either an autonomous driving system or a teleoperated valet system can be used as the underlying technology for this.CES 2024 visitors will have the opportunity to try out teleoperated valet parking for themselves. Teleoperation offers complete control in situations that could be very challenging for fully autonomous systems, such as in complex or unfamiliar environments.The teleoperator uses sophisticated technology and live camera images to guide and move the vehicle so that it can be parked and retrieved again in a carefully controlled manner. Possible future applications for this technology could include parking at events, at airports or in the logistics sector.
BMW Group and Valeo are taking their long-existing relationship to the next level with a new partnership. After the major announcement of their collaboration for ADAS domain controller, sensors and software for parking and maneuvering for BMW's upcoming platform generation "Neue Klasse", the BMW Group and Valeo announced their cooperation for the co-development of fully automated parking technologies up to Level 4.
At the International Motor Show (IAA) Mobility 2021, which will take place from September 7 to 12 in Munich, the BMW Group will be showcasing in a variety of ways what premium urban mobility could look like in the future. As an innovator in the development fields of software, digital services and networking, the fully electric SUV is able to communicate with the infrastructure and to carry out automated, driverless parking processes. Particular attention is paid to the safety of the driving maneuvers and the data exchange required for this between the vehicle, smartphone app and parking garage infrastructure. In doing so, the BMW Group is underlining that safety always has the highest priority. In addition to the complete parking process, viewers experience other automated service functions such as washing or charging the BMW iX with the help of robots.
