British PM May, Dealt Brexit Defeat in Parliament's Upper House

Description

Britain’s upper house of parliament inflicted an embarrassing defeat on Prime Minister Theresa May’s government on Wednesday. Her refusal to remain in a customs union with the EU after Brexit was challenged. May has struggled to unite her Conservative Party over Brexit. She has said Britain will leave the EU’s single market and customs union after it quits the bloc next March. May could seek a compromise on a customs deal if it meant safeguarding the union of the United Kingdom. May hopes to prevent the return of a hard border with EU member Ireland.
