VA Publishes Study About Opioids and Chronic Pain

According to a study by the Veterans Administration, the long-term use of opioids has no major difference for patients dealing with chronic pain. Researchers based their findings after examining the electronic health records of 600 patients with chronic pain and opioid prescriptions. The researchers found that pain intensity fluctuated over time for patients on opioids. However, they also found that discontinuing opioid treatment had no affect on the pain experienced by patients. The researchers added that their study provides empirical evidence that pain intensity remains unchanged after long-term opioid therapy.

Study Finds Common Back Pain Treatment Doesn't Offer Relief

A commonly prescribed treatment for people suffering from chronic back pain may not be providing any relief. A new review suggests that antidepressants when prescribed for chronic pain, provide little to no back pain relief. The review did find that the medications could however offer a modest benefit for osteoarthritis and sciatica. Their review looked at data from 33 clinical trials studying the use of antidepressants for chronic pain. Antidepressants are frequently prescribed by doctors to help chronic pain sufferers with their mental distress.

South Dakota Makes History In Surprising Outcome To Vote Over Legal Weed

South Dakota has voted to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana. According to Business Insider, it's the first time a state has voted to legalize both types of access to cannabis at the same time. Medical marijuana cards will be issued to patients with debilitating, chronic conditions--subject to a healthcare provider's recommendation. Recreational cannabis sales will be taxed at 15%. The proceeds will be used to cover the program's costs and to fund public schools and the state's general fund. Residents of the highly conservative state will be allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis for recreational use.

Study: You Can Probably Avoid An Appendectomy With One Simple Treatment

Nobody in their right mind would want appendicitis, but a new study says there is a way to have a fighting chance of avoiding surgery for it. Researchers from the University of Washington School of Medicine found 7 in 10 appendicitis patients treated with antibiotics ultimately avoid surgery. Of 1,552 participants from 14 states, about 71% of those who took antibiotics did not have surgery within three months. What's more, UPI reports participants in the antibiotic group missed about 3 1/2 fewer days of work. With surgery, the appendix is fully removed. But with antibiotics, appendicitis can return. The researchers next want to study the frequency of reoccurrence.
