The assembly plant of the SOVAC Production S.P.A. joint venture, made up of the Volkswagen Group and SOVAC, the Group’s importer in Algeria, closed 2018 with 53,000 cars assembled, which is three times more than in 2017 (17,015). Inaugurated in July 2017, last year the multibrand plant in Relizane, located 280 kilometres southwest of the capital Algiers, began assembling 11 new models by Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA and Volkswagen. The Volkswagen Group currently assembles 15 models in this plant, exclusively for the Algerian market: Audi A3 Sedan, A3 Sportback and Q2; SEAT Ibiza, Arona, Leon and Ateca; ŠKODA Fabia, Octavia and Rapid; and Volkswagen Polo, Golf, Tiguan and Passat, as well as the Volkswagen Caddy.
“I wanted to somehow immortalise the design of a car”, admits Alexandre Farto, better known as Vhils. This Portuguese street artist has created one of his latest works, ‘Tangible’, a sculpture made with 15 tonnes of cement that reinterprets the design of the SEAT Arona. This is how he carried out the design and production process of this unique piece, which took a year to complete.

The new SEAT Ibiza and the new SEAT Arona maintain their flawless 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, five years after they first achieved the impressive target. The recognition is even more impressive given how challenging Euro NCAP has made the testing process in recent years.The tests have become more rigorous and now include the introduction of a moving barrier to moving car frontal crash test, replacing the moderate offset-deformable barrier test. This helps Euro NCAP evaluate the protection of occupants inside the car, and how the cars’ front-end structurers contribute too. Add to this updated side impacts to include adjustments to the near-side barrier test speed and mass and far-side impact protection, focusing on driver protection and the potential interaction between driver and front seat passenger.
A car arrived on the market in 1972 that signalled a turning point in the world of mobility. It was the SEAT 127. With more than 1.3 million units sold, it became the brand’s all-time best-seller until the arrival of the SEAT Ibiza, which, after five generations, still holds the title with more than 6 million units sold. Today, a half century after the launch of the 127, these two vehicles, benchmarks in their respective eras in terms of technology, design and safety, hit the road together for the first time.
