Change Italy can believe in? Populist backlash ahead of key elections

Description

Emmanuel Macron should take heed. Across the Alps, a lesson in what happens when you don''t deliver the goods. Just four years ago, Italy elected another young reformer, but when the ballots are counted Sunday night, the center-left''s Matteo Renzi could be all washed up at age 43. We''ll see why and ask about an electorate squeezed by austerity, fed up with corruption and nervous about immigration. The populist backlash is palpable. So what do Italians want? Are they drifting away from Europe?

  • Europe's Next Worry: Populist surge ahead of key votes in Italy, Austria (part 2)

It's another day of reckoning for Europe this coming Sunday as Italians will head to the polls to decide whether or not to reform their post-war constitution. As of last week a quarter of voters were still undecided: a No vote could further boost insurgent parties like the eurosceptic Five Star Movement and spell doom for Renzi, the only remaining poster child for Europe's center-left. After Brexit and Trump, is this the new normal ahead of big elections in the Netherlands and France?

  • Italy local elections: Right seen ahead in regional vote, but no whitewash

Italy's rightist bloc has won at least three of seven regions at stake in local elections, but League leader Matteo Salvini looked unlikely to end half a century of centre-left rule in Tuscany, exit polls said on Monday. FRANCE 24's Seema Gupta tells us more.
