Sadly for 'Curly', the curling-playing robot, it wasn't his time for triumph on Thursday, when the artificial intelligence (AI) machine lost a game to his human competitors in the South Korean city of Icheon. The Ministry of Science and ICT hosted the competition between two robots, both named Curly, and a team of their human counterparts. Despite losing, both robots showed signs of being able to formulate strategy and to showcase evolving levels of skill.
As Olympic athletes were beginning their second official competition day in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games on Sunday, Korean humanoid robot skiers were still warming up at Welli Hill Park ski resort in Dunnae for a different competition - a slalom tournament. On the sidelines of the main human Olympics, the Korean government has organised Ski Robot Challenge, the world's first ever ski tournament for self-operational humanoid robots. The robots are to battle it out in the slalom discipline on Monday.
South Korea has announced plans to employ a fleet of 85 robot 'volunteers' during the Winter Olympics, including a vacuum bot, robots which provide info on the Games, drinks serving robots, and robot fish swimming in water tanks. Through these robots, South Korea is showcasing its technical prowess and leadership in robotics technology, having sponsored as many as eight companies with almost 1.5 million dollars to develop AI bots specifically for the Pyeongchang games.
