Kentucky Bill Outlawing Child Marriage Stalled By Conservative Lobbying

Description

A bill to stop child marriage in Kentucky was stalled by a conservative group this week. The development has left some state lawmakers furious, but some claim they just want to protect parents’ rights in the process. State Senator Julie Adams introduced Senate Bill 48 after she learned Kentucky has the third-highest rate of child marriage in the country, which was just below Texas and Florida. From 2000 to 2015, more than 10 thousand children were married in Kentucky.

'The Deals of Warren Buffett Volume 2: The Making of a Billionaire' reveals how Buffet gave Microsoft founder Bill Gates some 'marital' advice. According to Markets Insider, the Berkshire Hathaway boss took Gates and his future wife, Melinda, ring shopping at Borsheims--one of Buffet's businesses. That's when Buffett told Gates that he'd spent 6% of his net wealth on an engagement ring in 1951--and Gates should do the same. At the time of the 1993 romantic shopping trip, Gates was worth around $6.2 billion. Unfortunately for Buffet, Gates declined to shell out $370 million — nearly $660 million in today's dollars.

  • Child marriage in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), Oct 17 (EFE), (Camera: Orlando Barría).- At least one in five girls in the Dominican Republic ends up married or in informal unions as minors, and on many occasions, with men twice their age. At this time, two initiatives try to ban child marriage in the country, but statistics show that the problem is very deeply rooted and beyond the limits of the law. In fact, in 12% of weddings or unions registered in the country, the bride is under 15 years old, which is the minimum age allowed by law. This figure is far above the average for Latin America (5%), according to Unicef.FOOTAGE OF VICTIMS OF CHILD MARRIAGE. SOUNDBITES OF:-VIRGINIA SAIZ, DIRECTOR OF NGO PLAN INTERNATIONAL:"It has a lot to do with sexism, with the patriarchal culture which remains in the country's culture, apart from social or economic class. Similar practices can be seen in a poor family, on the border with Haiti, and also in a medium-high class family.""The fact that a girl under 18 years old gets married and becomes a mother means in most cases that her potential future as a worker or a student is interrupted. In most cases, these girls do not end the basic education, and therefore they will not be able to access a professional job."-VICTIM "It was very difficult for me and I had a big pregnant belly. It was my first pregnancy and I had any of my relatives around. I felt like it was a kidnapping, but knowing who the kidnapper was."-MAYRA JIMÉNEZ, DOMINICA REPUBLIC'S WOMEN'S MINISTER: "It is a shame for the country, from my point of view as a minister, as a mother and a citizen, I can assure that for us it is a shame that in the Dominican Republic child marriage is legal."

  • The GOP Has Far More Important Things To Do Than Help Tens Of Millions Of Americans

President Donald Trump has changed his thinking, and now says he wants a big stimulus bill passed before the general election on November 3rd. Fed Chair Jay Powell also wants to see one passed and has warned that without one, the US economy's recovery will surely falter. But the Republican-led Senate hasn't passed a new coronavirus relief bill since April 21st, and shows little signs of doing so before the election. According to Business Insider, the GOP is far more concerned with getting the Supreme Court tilted to the right by having Amy Coney Barrett confirmed. For more than five months, Congress has held up a comprehensive stimulus package for tens of millions of Americans and left them in limbo.
