Brussels, Nov 29 (EFE), (Camera: Leo RodrIguez).- From beer brewing to producing the Pfizer vaccine against Covid-19, the Belgian town of Puurs, population 26,000, has taken on an essential role in the campaign against the pandemic.“We have a good combination for the health of the people, Covid vaccine and good Duvel beer,” the town’s mayor, Koen van Der Heuvel, tells Efe in an interview.Situated in the province of Antwerp, 30 kilometers from Brussels, Puurs is a Dutch-speaking, agricultural town that is also home to several pharmaceutical companies, including American giant Pfizer, which has a factory capable of producing 400 million doses of the new vaccine each year.Around 5,000 people are employed in the pharmaceutical industry in Puurs, but the town is also famous for its strong Duvel beer, which it has been brewing since at least 1871.FOOTAGE OF PFIZER PLANT IN PUURS, BELGIUM.SOUNDBITES OF KOEN VAN DER HEUVEL, PUURS MAYOR.

The story had become a myth in the Belgian town of Verviers: the heart of the first mayor of the town would be sealed in a box, hidden in the middle of the town fountain bearing his name. On 20 August, the legend ceased to be one: during the restoration of the Pierre David fountain, workers discovered the heart of the former mayor of Verviers by chance.

"C'est une grosse surprise et une très belle reconnaissance. Je voulais montrer qu'on peut faire une cuisine différente, qui a du goût, qui a du sens" : à 41 ans, la cheffe Claire Vallée décroche la première étoile Michelin accordée à un restaurant vegan, pour son établissement ONA (Origine Non Animale) à Arès, en Gironde. Une consécration pour ce restaurant qu'elle a monté en 2016 grâce à une campagne de financement participatif, sans prêts bancaires classiques.
