The streets of the Indian city of Bengaluru were covered in white foam, as seen in footage captured on Wednesday, and residents continued to struggle with the toxic froth spilling out of the city’s lakes due to a concoction of chemicals and sewage, which are then carried across the city by winds. The foam has become a regular fixture in the city, carrying with it a number of chemicals, including dangerous nitrates and sulphates, which have lead to health problems among residents.
EU climate chief Wopke Hoekstra laments that it has taken "30 years" of UN climate talks for humanity to "arrive at the beginning of the end of fossil fuels," calling a first-ever call for the world to transition away from the top culprit of climate change behind a planetary crisis "long overdue." Following all-night negotiations, the draft deal proposed by the Emirati presidency of the COP28 summit in Dubai would, if adopted, mark the first time that all fossil fuels are addressed in the 28-year history of international climate conferences. UN climate chief Simon Stiell accuses nations of "posturing" at the COP28 talks in Dubai and urged them to reach an ambitious deal to ensure the world meets its targets against global warming. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Chilean President Gabriel Boric board an aircraft bound for Antarctica in Chile's southernmost region of Magallanes. The two men will visit three Chilean scientific bases, the Collins glacier and Kopaitic Island on a three-day tour to witness firsthand "the deadly impact of the climate crisis," according to Guterres. Images show Berlin's Brandenburg Gate splattered with orange paint after activists from the "Last Generation" ("Letzte Generation") environmental collective spray-painted the six pillars of the emblematic monument to warn of the urgency of global warming and demand a change in the German government's policy.
