  • Spain Seeks The Arrest Of Ousted Catalan Leader Puigdemont

    On Thursday, the Spanish state prosecutor asked for a Europe-wide arrest warrant to be issues for ousted Catalan president Carles Puigdemont after he failed to make an appearance in court. Spain's high court ordered Puigdemont and other ministers to appear on Thursday, however Puigdemont fled to Brussels on Monday as Spain's state prosecutor announced he was seeking charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds against the deposed president as wekk as thirteen of his ministers. The charges come following Catalonia's October first independence referendum, which had been ruled illegal by Spain's Constitutional Court.

    When Spain's central government took over Catalonia to prevent it from seceding, a snap election was called by the government. On Tuesday, the region's ousted leader Carles Puigdemont agreed to the election but he said the fight for independence would go on. After the Catalan regional parliament issued a unilateral declaration of independence on Friday, Puigdemont traveled to Brussels, but he has been summoned to appear in court in Madrid on Thursday and Friday. Belgium's crisis center is evaluating whether Puigdemont needs to be protected by Belgian authorities.
