Thousands Flee From Syria's Besieged Eastern Ghouta As Assault Continues

Description

On Thursday, thousands of Syrian civilians fled from a eastern Ghouta, crossing by foot to army positions in the first reported mass exodus from the besieged enclave since Syrian government forces launched an assault to capture it last month. According to a report by Reuters, the exodus may prove to be a key moment in eastern Ghouta, in which the fate of civilians trapped in the last large rebel bastion has been a central point. The United Nations estimates that 400,000 people remain under siege with little access to food or medicine. The government along with its Russian allies have pounded the area with air strikes since mid-February and, last week, launched a ground assault that has seized much of the territory, further isolating towns in the region.
