Thousands Flee From Syria's Besieged Eastern Ghouta As Assault Continues

Description

On Thursday, thousands of Syrian civilians fled from a eastern Ghouta, crossing by foot to army positions in the first reported mass exodus from the besieged enclave since Syrian government forces launched an assault to capture it last month. According to a report by Reuters, the exodus may prove to be a key moment in eastern Ghouta, in which the fate of civilians trapped in the last large rebel bastion has been a central point. The United Nations estimates that 400,000 people remain under siege with little access to food or medicine. The government along with its Russian allies have pounded the area with air strikes since mid-February and, last week, launched a ground assault that has seized much of the territory, further isolating towns in the region.

According to a report by Reuters, Syrian government forces have intensified their assault on Eastern Ghouta, making advances that both a war monitor and state media claim have splintered the enclave. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has said that the capture of Mesraba, a town connecting the northern and southern halves of the rebel-held enclave, as well as advanced into nearby farmland, have brought critical roads directly under fire by the army. The British-based observatory claims that the relentless three-week assault on the last major rebel stronghold near Damascus has captured about half its area and killed 976 people.

Limited Western intervention has shown no sign of having any impact on the ground, where Assad’s forces have pressed on with his offensive.

  • Rebels Will Not Allow People To Flee From Part Of Eastern Ghouta

As thousands of people fled from one town in Syria's besieged Eastern Ghouta area into the capital on Thursday, civilians in another part of the enclave were prevented from escaping by rebel forces. Eastern Ghouta is one of the last major rebel-held areas in Syria. A brutal military onslaught there has left more than one thousand dead since mid-February. At least 10 thousand people flooded out of the town of Hamoriya on Thursday and into government-controlled parts of Damascus. It was one of the largest single-day exoduses of the eight-year war
