UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Lebanon for a two-day visit during which he is to inspect camps for Palestinian and Syrian refugees.
Angolan president, Joao Lourenco, hosts talks in Luanda to discuss the rising tensions in eastern DRC with their neighbours, Rwanda. Several heads of state can be seen arriving, including the President of Burundi and former president of Kenya. Paul Kagame, the Rwandan president was not in attendance, instead Vincent Biruta, minister for foreign affairs represented the country at the summit. Eastern DRC has witnessed fierce fighting in recent months between Congolese troops and the M23 rebel group, prompting the East African Community (EAC) bloc to deploy a joint regional force to quell the violence. The man on the right is Antonio Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal and UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and he is set to replace Ban Ki Moon as the next Secretary General of the United Nations. 66-year-old Guterres worked as UN High Commissioner for Refugees over the past decade and dealt with the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War during his tenure. The official choice will be announced in a formal vote by the Security Council later on Thursday.
