So far, Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has won two thirds of the seats in Myanmar's lower house of the parliament in the country's historic elections. But even with a victory Myanmar laws do not allow Suu Kyi to become president.
Myanmar, Jul 27 (EFE/EPA).- Myanmar military rulers have formally annulled the Nov.8 election results, claiming widespread irregularities by the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) of Aung San Suu Kyi, state media reported Tuesday.The military claimed that a probe found 11.3 million fraud cases in the elections swept by the NLD. Naypyidaw, Apr 26 (EFE/EPA).- Myanmar’s military junta continues to deny deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi a meeting with her lawyers, her legal representatives said Monday after a court hearing in which she appeared online.Suu Kyi, under house arrest since the Feb. 1 coup, faces several trials on charges such as importing electronic devices or revealing official secrets without being able to meet with her team of lawyers, despite having requested it on several occasions.One of her legal representatives, Khin Maung Zaw, told EFE that during the Monday hearing in Naypyitaw the judge asked a policeman if he had told his superiors about the request for Suu Kyi and deposed President Win Myint to meet with their defense teams. The United States says it is "disturbed" by charges filed against Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, two days after a military coup.
