Mali, one year after France's Operation Serval

Description

It's almost a year now since France responded to an SOS from Mali's interim government in Bamako. Radical Islamists, who had swept across the country's northern deserts, were getting too close to the capital for comfort and the Malian army was ill equipped to mount a defence. The French troops were given a heroes' welcome by many as they pushed north, freeing towns from the rebels' often brutal rule. But things went less smoothly afterwards. We take a look back at the past year in Mali.
